Specialty Decorative Painting
Brushes
These four decorative painting brushes are primarily
used for textural painting effects, which can include softening of paint
applications.
Fan brushes have a unique
ferrule that spreads out the bristles of the brush into a fan shape. (What's
a ferrule?) Fans can be used to soften or blend an application of
paint. They are also used to apply textures such as grass.
Mops and mini-mops
generally have an oval ferrule and a mass of soft bristles. The head has
a rounded shape. Mops resemble cosmetic powder brushes, and in many
respects are used for the same purposes... softening and blending an
application of color. Mops can also be used to gently pounce paint onto
a surface for a soft textural effect, such as fur.
The deerfoot decorative
painting brush has bristles tightly set into a round ferrule. The end of
the bristles are cut off in a flat angle, resulting in an oval-shaped
tip. This brush can be used in a variety of ways, including applying
oval-shaped daubs of paint like paw prints, or pouncing paint onto a
surface for a textured effect. It can also be dragged to produce the
effect of fur or grass.
A scruffy brush is similar
to a mop, but tends to have coarser bristles cut to a flatter end. The
ferrule may be rounded or flattened, and tends to spread the bristles
out, rather than holding the bristles in a controlled shape. Scruffy
brushes, as the name suggest, are used for applying paint on in a loose
textural manner, and are designed for a more energetic pouncing of the
bristles against a surface.
