Decorative Painting Brushes

Answers to the Quick Quiz Brush Up (Part 3)

Specialty Decorative Painting Brushes

Like the decorative painting brushes in Part 1, these brushes also have bristles set into flat ferrules. (What's a ferrule?) The difference is that instead of squared tips, the tips of the brushes below have been shaped in various ways to perform special functions.

(Note: The specific names given to a brush type often vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.)

(Note: The actual fiber that the bristles are made from would be a separate variable to consider when choosing decorative painting brushes.)

Angle shaders are just like shaders or flats, except that the end is cut at an angle. In many cases, except for some stroke work, angle shaders and regular shaders can be used interchangeably. Angle shaders are particularly good for painting into tight corners and for floating paint.

Filberts and ovals are simply shaders or flats which have had the tip cut to a rounded shape. This creates a nice rounded shape to the start of a brush stroke (compared to the flat start of a flat brush, or the pointed shape of a round brush). This also makes it a nice brush for painting into a rounded area.

Cat's tongues and daggers are also shaders or flats with shaped tips. In this case, the flat brush is cut so that the end comes to a point in the center of the brush tip. This creates a pointed shaped to the start of a brush stroke. It's a good brush for painting into tight corners.

Note: There is another type of brush more commonly called a "dagger" that does not have a flat ferrule. (Sometimes the name given to a particular brush depends on the manufacturer.)

The word comb refers to the staggered cutting of the tip of the brush which allows the brush to work like many tiny liner brushes at once. The multiple lines produced by this brush are perfect for painting hair, grass, and other texture effects quickly and easily. The regular comb is simply a shader/flat with this special staggered tip. It is also sometimes called a grass comb.

The filbert comb is a filbert brush that has been given the staggered cutting. The rounded shape of the filbert provides a softer start for the lines.
