Parts of a Decorative Painting Brush

The ferrule of a paint brush is the metal part that attaches the bristles or hairs of the brush head to the handle. The shape of the ferrule controls how the bristles of the brush are laid out. The ferrule may be round, flattened, oval, or even triangular.

The head of the brush is composed of bristles. This head may be shaped in any number of ways.

In essence, the type of decorative painting brush is determined by the ferrule plus the shape of the head.

(Note: The actual fiber that the bristles are made from would be a separate variable to consider when choosing decorative painting brushes.)
